Dr. Michael Demetriou completed the combined M.D. and Ph.D. program at the University of Toronto, with his Ph.D. in the field of Molecular and Medical Genetics. This was followed by a Neurology residency at the University of Toronto, becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

A post-doctoral fellowship at the highly prestigious Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute in Toronto, one of the top bio-medical research institutes in the world, resulted in a seminal paper published in the prestigious journal Nature that has revolutionized our understanding of cell biology and immunity. Clinically, Dr Demetriou specialized in the care of Multiple Sclerosis patients by mentoring with Stanley van den Noort, a world renowned Multiple Sclerosis clinician.

Currently, Dr. Demetriou is an Associate Professor of Neurology, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UC Irvine, where he serves as the Director of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society designated UC Irvine Comprehensive MS Care Center, currently one of two such centers in California.
